I still have my 1st Grade Weekly Reader proclaiming “X-15 Pilots Will Fly to Space!” So it is no surprise that I have devoured far more than my share of the histories of epic rocket plane flights over the high desert of California. Some were “just the facts ma’am” data-rich project summaries, some were personal memoirs written long after the raw intensity of the moment had cooled and heart rates slowed, after the nuances were lost to the vagaries of human recall blunted by time, and after details were overwritten by multiple repetitions as the great stories were shared.
